UFC 130: Edgar vs Maynard 3 Overview

UFC 130 Edgar vs Maynard 3 is set for May 28, 2011 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas NV. Heres whats on the card

UFC Lightweight Championship
Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard

Quinton Jackson vs. Matt Hamill
Frank Mir vs. Roy Nelson
Rick Story vs. Thiago Alves
Brian Stann vs. Jorge Santiago
Miguel Torres vs. Demetrious Johnson
Kendall Grove vs. Tim Boetsch
Renan Barao vs. Cole Escovedo
Chris Cariaso vs. Michael McDonald
Cody McKenzie vs. Bart Palaszewski
Travis Browne vs. Stefan Struve

I gotta be honest I'm not so excited about this card, although there are some great fighters in this card that should make for great fights, I do not agree with the fact that Maynard is facing Edgar in an immediate rematch after their 2nd bout ending in a draw.

Fights to Look Out For
Rick Story vs. Thiago Alves

This fight is actually going to be on the prelims live on spike, but if your one to not watch the prelims because they aren't big names you should definitely check this one out. Thiago "The Pitbull" Alves is coming off a unanimous decision win against John Howard who was considered one of the top prospects in the welterweight division. Alves has been set back with losses to Jon Fitch at UFC 117 and GSP at UFC 100 but both are pound for pounders. With victories over Josh Koscheck, Matt Hughes, Karo Perisyan, and Chris Lytle, Alves has fought every top fighter in the division. Rick Story is coming off a 5 fight win streak proving to be worthy of a step up in competition, look for Story to try to neutralize Alves' superiour stand up by taking the fight to the ground and trying to keep him there. My prediction is Alves winning by TKO

Travis Browne vs. Stefan Struve
Stefan Struve who is coming off a 2 strait wins and will be battling Travis Browne an undefeated challenger. Stefan is the tallest fighter in UFC standing at 6' 11. He struggles against the tougher caliber fighters with losses to Roy Nelson and Junior Dos Santos but shows a lot of potential. Travis Browne is coming off a draw against french heavy weight Cheick Kongo and has never been defeated, with 8 of his 10 wins coming by (T)KO

Brian Stann vs. Jorge Santiago
Brian Stann is a ex marine and former WEC light heavyweight champion, he's coming off a dominant win over Chris Lytle. Jorge Santiago is a seasoned mma veteran and should be a good test for Brian Stann. I'm a follower of Brian Stann, I've seen him dominate in WEC and what he did to Chris Lytle in his last fight might of been a worse beating than Anerson Silva gave him. He's a legit prospect and should be fighting tougher caliber fighters very soon.

Frank Mir vs Roy Nelson should be a really good fight, Nelson is a tough SOB and can take anybodys best punches but Mir is a ground specialist so lets see if Nelson could neutralize that level of jiu jitsu.

Rampage Jackson vs Matt Hammill is going to be a huge test for Hammill, he's coming off a 5 fight win streak and has proven himself as on of the top fighters in the light heavyweight division, a win over Jackson would sling shot him closer to a chance to fight for the title.

Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard clash again for the 3rd time, I'm not a fan of this fight at all. I totally disagree with Maynard even getting this fight, I agree that their last fight was epic and its a shame it came to a draw but I think Anthony Pettis should of got this fight on May 28th to unify the UFC WEC light weight belts.
Pettis is fighting Clay Guida for the number one contender spot at the TUF Finale which I think is gonna be a way better fight, but we'll see.
